| Anthony questions what Alun and Susanne mean by 'contract'? | ||
|
Dear Alun and Susanne, Thanks for your letter and the information it contained. I have no intention of prolonging the dispute which was precipitated by your leaflet, clearly as a result of earlier confusion and lack of communication. I hope we can find a fair resolution. As you know, I have worked closely with Roman on setting up the 'Office' situation, but I have not been involved in detailed arrangements with the 'tenants'. Roman had mentioned that he felt some frustration in his correspondence with you, and I did not know much about your project until I received the copy for your press release. From my point of view, it seems to be a case of crossed purposes. I am familiar with the document headed 'A New Business Centre in Central London' because I helped to draft it. This is more of an advertisement or outline proposal than, as you would have it, a 'contract'. It is certainly vague on some points and coded in the way it parodies a commercial landlord's marketing material. It is surely intended to promote discussion and exploration of the possibilities. The emphasis in this document, in my view, is on occupation, activity, organisation and generating new material (as opposed to display, exhibition, presentation of old material). The leaflet you produced without sufficient consultation with your supposed collaborators seemed to me to epitomise how much you'd misunderstood this, so it seems bizarre that you want now to hold to a 'contract'which I would imagine would have to be a two-way thingthat never really got off the ground. I have offered to share some responsibility for an unfortunate situation (seeing as co-operation seemed impossible) which is why I sent you the cheque to cover some of your out of pocket expenses. I am sorry you do not find this acceptable, but I look forward to hearing what you suggest. I would be grateful if you would send me the photocopy of Barbara and Alexander's comic strip. They are relying on you to do this. With best wishes, Anthony Auerbach |
