St George’s Hall Concert Room, Liverpool
Viennese Masters, Ensemble 10/10
This concert explores, as its starting point, the newest music from Vienna. HK Gruber and Kurt Schwertsik are leading members of the Third Viennese School, which emerged in the 1960s; their music draws together influences as diverse as Stockhausen, Cage and Schubert, and blends them with an often irreverent wit. Johanna Doderer (b.1969) ‘proves convincingly that even today you can create intense music by combining late-romantic models with minimalism’ (Die Presse, Vienna). Lukas Ligeti took a different musical path from his famous father into the world of jazz performance; his compositions have been championed by Gruber. Doderer, Ligeti – could this be the Fourth Viennese School?

Marwan Abado - Music Beyond Orient
Marwan Abado was born in Beirut to Palestinian refugee parents. At 18, he followed his Iraqi mentor, the Oud-virtuoso Asim Chalabi, to Austria to continue his studies, settling in Vienna and becoming widely regarded throughout the country as a musician, singer, composer and poet.
Abado’s music has its roots in the classical Arabic tradition of the TAQ´SIM, which is not restricted to particular rhythms, but which springs from the inner impulses of the musician. Contemporary poetry and prose often provide the inspiration for Abado’s lyrics; thought-provoking commentary on the political realities of the Palestinians is interwoven through his texts leading to what he describes as „cosmopolitan, borderless music“.
Since 2000, he has been playing with the renouned Austrian percussionist Peter Rosmanith, who will accompany Marwan at this very special and intimate performance.
